If you ever find yourself in the area of La Fortuna or Arenal, Costa Rica, I highly recommend a visit to Catarata Rio Fortuna or La Fortuna Waterfall. Just a few miles outside of La Fortuna, it’s easily reached within minutes by car, taxi or if you’re feeling adventurous or simply traveling on a budget, you can also walk there in about 1-1.5 hours.

This amazing waterfall plummets several hundred feet over the edge and hits the surface of the water below with awe inspiring power. The water temperature is brisk but perfect for anyone to cool down in on a hot tropical day as is common in Costa Rica. If you don’t fancy a swim, you can always take photos or admire the waterfall from a distance.

To reach the waterfall, head south out of Fortuna on Route 702 for a little over a kilometer or .75 miles. You’ll see several signs for the waterfall, then turn right on Diagonal 301 and follow it for 4 km until you reach the waterfall. Parking and the entrance are on the left. There is a guard in the parking lot so your belongings will be safe in the car. Lockers are also available for a couple dollars and a $10 key deposit.

Access to the waterfall costs $15 (as of April 2018) and is managed by a non-profit so all proceeds go towards conservation efforts. They accept Colones, USD and credit cards. The waterfall is down 500+ steps but they are well maintained; take your time, hold the handrails and you should be fine. For the trip back up, there several rest spots to catch your breath.

Before you head down to the waterfall make sure to use the restroom if necessary or change into swimwear as there are no facilities at the bottom. A good viewpoint of the waterfall is available just next to the start of the stairs, don’t forget to take a peek before heading down. Once you reach the bottom, there is another platform for taking photos and swimming is allowed in the waterfall. However you aren’t allowed to swim too close; not that you’d want to be caught under the thundering falls anyway. A nice pair of water shoes can help you navigate the slippery rocks. After you’ve enjoyed the waterfall and taken all your pictures head back up the stairs and grab a smoothie or cold beer at the cafe.
