POZA DEL OBISPO, PUERTO RICO

Of the 15 Must See Beaches in Puerto Rico, my favorite has to be Poza del Obispo. It’s a large tide pool at the rocky edge of a beach where the waves come crashing over the rocks in spectacular fashion; sometimes launching over 30 feet in the air. The site is named “The Bishop’s Pool” after Bishop Juan Alejo de Arizmendi y de la Torre came ashore after his boat sank in 1785.

Poza del Obispo

Poza del Obispo is a free public beach, but has few amenities besides a shower to rinse off and a dirt parking lot. However, there is a gazebo and occasional vendors; but really, it’s a quiet beach with a long sandy stretch for a nice walk. Also, the area outside the tide pools is popular among surfers.

The pool can be quite popular with the locals so get there early or go later to watch the beautiful sunset. For an even better view, hike to the top of the hill by the lighthouse overlooking the Caribbean. From there you can see the waves crash over the rocks into the pool.

Poza del Obispo and nearby lighthouse

For day trippers out of San Juan, expect an hour drive each way along the scenic northern coast. There are many other gems along the way, for instance, Poza las Mujeres.
