If you get tired of baking in the Fijian sun on an island resort or maybe get a little too sunburned like we did and need a little self care, perhaps a trip to a natural volcanic hot spring and mud bath are in order.
The Sabeto Hot Spring is located about 30 minutes from Nadi in the foothills of the mountains. Many resorts offer day tours with transportation and entrance from $70 FJD or you can take a taxi or the bus. If you arrange your own transportation, the fee to enter is $20 FJD per person with the option to rent a towel for $5 FJD if you forget yours.
The first step is to cover yourself from head to toe in the mud provided in the buckets. The mud contains volcanic minerals that are good for your skin and is the essential element of the whole experience. Be careful not to slip as the mud is quite slick. I learned that lesson the hard way and had my friends and the locals laugh at my expense.
Once you’ve applied all the mud, you need to let it fully dry which can take about 15-30 minutes depending on how sunny it is. If you don’t apply the mud evenly across your body, some areas will dry faster than others so try to apply an even layer. As it dries, the mud can make your skin feel a little tight; which is an odd feeling but will be worth it at the end.
After all the mud has dried, carefully, step into the first of four pools and wash all the mud off your body. Enjoy the warmth of the water for a little bit, there is no need to rush through the process. As I washed off the mud, I could feel my peeling sunburnt skin washing away with it. The skin underneath felt fresh and soft. It was like an instant healing process, something magical if you will.
As you progress through the following pools, the water gets both cleaner and hotter. The last pool is so hot (about the same as a jacuzzi) that some guests decided to skip it all together but we braved it for a few minutes.
When we finally finished the whole process, we all felt like new men. We were refreshed and our skin felt as soft as a baby’s. Although I had visited a hot spring in Costa Rica, this had been my first time doing a mud bath and hot spring together.
It was the perfect end to our stay in Fiji and 2018 before heading off the celebrate the new year in Sydney, Australia.
