PIRATES COVE; FREEPORT, BAHAMAS

If you ever find yourself on a cruise to the Bahamas that stops in Freeport, you’ll probably end up wondering what there is to do there. After all, I recently found myself in the same predicament while on a cruise with some friends for spring break. I’ve been to the Bahamas several times before on cruises so many of my friends looked to me for information on what to do and other secrets that I might have on making the most of the time on ship and shore; however, I had little to say in regards to Freeport

Unlike Nassau, which is a busy cruise port with a lot of hussle and bussle and tourist tailored activities, Freeport is more of a shipping port and sees less cruise ships than the capital. This is clearly visible from the moment you arrive in port; before you even disembark you can see the shipping containers and dry docks spread out around the harbor.

When we finally set foot in port, our group walked around the shops momentarily but our main goal was to find somewhere to set up for the day to relax and enjoy the warm Caribbean waters. After a brief conversation with a local about our goals, he recommended we take a cab to Pirates Cove on Taino Beach. You can take a taxi van there for $7 per person each way.

Pirates Cove offers a variety of activities for visitors to enjoy throughout the day from kayaking, to banana boating, to ziplining. Guests are also welcome to free wifi and as much sun and sand as they can handle after paying the $4 entrance fee. There are bathrooms, food stands and a large gazebo that houses a bar stocked with many local beers and drinks. Several friends bought the unlimited drinks package and sipped rum punch all day from a coconut for $30.

The weather was perfect so we mostly laid out on the beach for the day. I even brought my hammock and set it up between two palm trees; the perfect way to spend the day.

When we first arrived, the beach was mostly empty but as the morning progressed, many other cruisers from our ship found their way to Pirates Cove as well. If you’re looking for a more secluded beach, this probably isn’t your best bet but if you would like a lively beach with lots to do and experience, I would recommend Pirates Cove for the day.
