Tabacon Thermal River
Since 1968 the Arenal Volcano has lain dormant on the surface but underneath, hot magma still churns at astonishing temperatures. As temperatures build, excess heat needs to be released to keep the volcano from violently exploding and nature has found the best way to release it; thermal springs.
Dozens of nice resorts have harnessed the heat of the volcano and created gorgeous pools at exorbitant daily rates. Fortunately, there is a place where the thermal river flows right near the main road and is free and easily accessible to all. Just past the the Tabacon Thermal Resort, the main river flows through a series of pools in the landscape that make the perfect natural jacuzzis.
To reach the river, just follow the path from the bridge down to the river and wade right in. The current is slow and the river is shallow. The water temperature is warm but not too hot. It’s better to go later in the day as the sun starts to dip down, otherwise it may be too warm in Costa Rica’s warm tropical climate to thoroughly enjoy.
If you are driving, there is parking just before the bridge that costs a few dollars. The fee is charged by security there.
