Of the numerous waterfalls in the region, Cascada de Minas Viejas is one of the more established tourist destinations. It’s a 90 minutes drive from Ciudad Valles through the sugar cane fields much like many of the other waterfalls. Parking is available at the top of the waterfall next to the steps leading down.
Entrance is 30 pesos per person or about $1.50 USD. If you wish to climb around the base of the waterfall and jump off some of the rocks, the lifeguards will require you to wear a life vest which can be rented for 20 pesos for 2 hours. If you decide not to wear one, I can tell you from experience that they will blow the whistle at you.
The area near the waterfall is quite deep but the shallow swimming holes that the water trickles through before flowing back into the river are mostly waist deep.
There is a picnic area that some people set up at to grill food and have a family feast. In the parking lot, a roadside hut offers snack and drinks for a pretty good price as well.
